A little bit of chit-chat
Around 50 validators failed to update their version of the Cosmos Hub, causing them to go down during the deployment of the Rho upgrade. According to the Stakecito analysis, the recent upgrade process for Cosmos SDK application binaries was affected by a bug that caused validators running the latest version of Cosmovisor (>v1.1) to fail the upgrade. The upgrade handler was specifically searching for a folder named “v8-Rho”, but the new Cosmovisor versions (v1.2 and above) handle case-sensitive directories differently, resulting in a failure to recognize the folder. This bug could have been caught earlier if the upgrade had taken place during the day when there were more validators online. However, the upgrade occurred at night for most of Europe, leading to a delay in detecting and addressing the issue.
Killing the dog
A proposal to shut down the Cerberus chain has passed. The reason for the shutdown is the fact that 41% of the supply is owned by a single founder who has disappeared. There have been no direct inputs to development or progress in the last six months by the founder party, and attempts at communication have been unsuccessful. The lack of progress has led to the decision to shut down the Cerberus chain. An attempt to improve community distribution through an airdrop for osmo and atom holders was not implemented, which was one of the points on the original roadmap.
In the aftermath of the closure, builders may continue to build a new chain with the same community, but it will have no relationship with the Cerberus project. If the proposal passes, validators will be required to set up a halt height equal to 4850000, expected on March 6, 2023, and change their moniker to “Closing the chain” or any similar variation or message.
Censor
A controversial proposal to censor validators using Allnodes validator-as-a-service program is getting a highly divided vote. Allnodes, a cryptocurrency infrastructure service, has been accused by Notional of compromising the security of several validators on its platform. According to Notional’s investigation, Allnodes created the operator seed phrase for most networks by default, even claiming to offer free tokens.
The investigation also revealed that all Cosmos chains listed on the Allnodes website, including the Cosmos Hub, Osmosis and Juno, had 100% certain issues. In response to the findings, Allnodes added support for hardware wallets for operator keys on Cosmos chains, though hardware wallets are not part of the default user flow when registering. Allnodes has continued to assure customers that their validator operator seed phrases are uncompromised because they are deleted.
